La Gran Depresión y la etapa posterior del New Deal supusieron para el cine una apertura a las realidades sociales, que se tradujo en la renovación de sus mecanismos narrativos y en la consolidación de los géneros populares. A menor escala, el medio experimentó un fenómeno similar durante la crisis de los 70.
