This paper constitutes the presentation of the first practical results of research obtained in 2006 regarding the study of the correspondence kept up by Louis XIV of France and Philip V of Spain in the early years of the 18th century. This initial study was undertaken in three stages. Firstly, we performed a rigorous and in-detail analysis of the stylistic and formal components of the epistolary corpus subject of translation. Such analysis allowed us, secondly, to establish a precise categorization of the most significant common features of the ‘court language’ employed in Versailles and Madrid at that period. On the basis of the outcomes achieved in these two phases, we could ultimately create some preliminary patterns of performance that allowed us to perform a coherent and systematic translation of the correspondence kept up by both monarchs in the context of the War of Spanish Succession, a historical fact whose repercussion is by all known.
