Abstract

In dealing with memory-based translation tools a distinction is frequently drawn between machine translation applications, which some translators consider a useless endeavour, and computer assisted translation tools, which are considered essential for some translation tasks. In the present paper we look at memory based translation tools and underline the fact that the technologies they use have their origin in machine translation research. Finally we examine new trends in the application of memory-based (machine and assisted) applications as a consequence of globalization and universal access to the Internet.
