This paper revises the concept of translation competence and some of the latest translation competence models proposed –PACTE 1998, Kelly 2002, European Master’s in translation 2009– in order to understand the current situation of legal translation at the European Union, and propose the application of certain translation approaches to prevent problems caused by the lack of extra-linguistic competence (PACTE 1998)/ cultural and thematic competences (Kelly 2002)/ thematic competence (EMT 2009).
