This study analyses José de Urcullu’s (translator of the early 1800’s) translated version of the famous «Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard» by Thomas Gray from Ernst-August Gutt’s (1989) cognitive approach to translation. This translation approach is based on Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson’s (1986) Cognitive Principle of Relevance. More particularly, the present paper focuses on exploring the interpretive resources activated by the translator when, first, inferring the implicit contents from the source text —same propositions and resembling explicatures and implicatures— and then communicating these to the target text reader.
