This interview becomes a reflection with Professor Miguel de Aguilera on the metaverse, in the context of a communication environment highly conditioned by technology. A thorough study of the past to understand the present with the daring to predict the future has marked the fruitful trajectory of Prof. Aguilera, who has also followed with keen interest the development of the metaverse in the academic world. Through this conversation, the interviewee discusses from the origins of the term metaverse to the impacts it has had on the cultural industry, its scope in social processes, as well as its future within research in the field of communication. The launch of the "big thing" and its current evolution highlight the economy of attention and the economic and symbolic power exercised by large digital platforms; while emphasizing the increasing need for the active role of audiences.
