Abstract

In 1977 the Italian avant-garde poet and director Carmelo Bene wrote a highly personal rereading of the Shakespearean classic Richard III. Later, in 1981, this version, produced by RAI, was broadcast on the Italian television. Meanwhile, in 1979 Georges Lavaudant made his own version of the reinterpretation of Bene: La Rose et la Hache, a work that was also performed in Spain in 2005. In this article we analyze possible similarities and differences between both, the television version by Bene and the theatrical by Lavaudant with the aim of observing the possible influences of the first on the second, as well as possible influences both received and borrowed from other versions and adaptations of Richard III.
