This paper analyses some essential factors when translating poetry in general and from German into Spanish in particular. Cultural factors determine, from both an individual and a collective point of view, not only the original text, but also the result of the translation. In this sense, it is worth asking whether the diachrony that shapes every cultural event can be transferred to another culture, since every translation implies an artificial suspension in a different framework to the text that is its starting point. The complexity inherent in this phenomenon is multiplied when it comes to translating poetry, since what we call meaning is the result of a set of metrical, phonic and rhythmic elements, on the one hand, and lexical-metaphorical elements on the other, all of which are linked to a community of speakers, in a broad sense. Faced with the text, the translator has to make a prior decision about the limits and scope that he/she sets for his/her own translation.
