La monografía, centrada en uno de los intelectuales ingleses más relevantes e influyentes de finales del siglo XVII y comienzos del XVIII, se divide en dos secciones claramente diferenciadas. Javier Martín Párraga, profesor del Departamento de Filología Inglesa de la Universidad de Córdoba, ofrece en primer lugar un recorrido por la biografía de Joseph Addison y la seminal publicación The Spectator; al mismo tiempo que estudia en profundidad la recepción crítica que el autor y el periódico han recibido hasta el momento presente, tanto en España como a nivel internacional.
