The use of photography in historical research is still a subject of controversy and debate among researchers, a pending issue still requiring a consensus regarding its scientific value as a document. The methodology regarding this matter is usually limited to general approaches, without focusing on the source and the typology, and so this article wishes to propose new methodological criteria to be used in the historical research of photographs, so that they can serve to verify and validate contents, justify hypotheses and ultimately enhance the scientific quality of the investigations. The proposal offered is based on already well-known practical cases and experience, which establish the common link for their relevance and use for historical study from photography. As a result, a variety of criteria on documentary analysis are provided, and a general decalogue for the verification and validation of contents drawn from their sources.
