A Dangerous Method (2011) is a historical drama directed by David Cronenberg about the relationship between some of the first proponents of psychoanalysis: Carl G. Jung, Sigmund Freud and Sabina Spielrein. This article engages with the work as a character study, based on several elements of analytical psychology as founded by Jung. The film’s narrative is interpreted as part of the process of «individuation» of which he wrote, in which the individual must contend with archetypes such as «the persona», «the shadow», «the anima» or «the father». A Dangerous Method serves as a dramatization of Jung’s personal crisis between 1904 and 1913, and how it became crucial for his ensuing theories.
