On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the donation made by Pablo Picasso in 1970, the Museu Picasso in Barcelona is hosting "Lola Ruiz Picasso", an exhibition conceived as the culmination of a year in which the essence of the art gallery's collection has been reclaimed. Curated by Malén Gual and presented from 12 November 2021 to 27 February 2022, this exhibition pays tribute to the Malaga painter's sister and her work as guardian of the Picasso treasure in Barcelona, a role she inherited from her mother, María Picasso López. Her rigour in caring for the legacy left by her brother is admirable, as it took place during the period between the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship, at which time she herself passed on this responsibility to her sons, the Vilató Ruiz brothers. The material donated by the artist consists of 236 oil paintings, 1,149 drawings, 17 sketchbooks, 4 textbooks with drawings and notes and 40 works by other artists, including a large part of the works produced during his formative years as an artist up to the so-called blue period and the paintings he executed in 1917 in the Catalan capital while working for the Ballets Russes.
