Abstract

Hegel’s discussion with Spi- noza in the Jena years reveals how his own concept of substance differs from Spinoza’s, as stated in the Preface to the Phenomeno- logy of Spirit. The thesis that the True is to be grasped and expressed “not only as Substance, but equally as Subject” shows the profound differences between both phi- losophers. Furthermore, Hegel’s conception of the living substance shows how for him substance is in truth actual only in so far as it is subject. With this thesis, Hegel takes distance from any other conception of a static substance excluding mediation and internal development.
