The article reflects on the use that graphic designers give to drawing and collage to visualize ideas. By understanding these specific uses, we could demonstrate how to enhance these skills in the classrooms and creative processes of students. To delve deeper into the topic, we implemented an innovative teaching strategy in an optional drawing course for the Graphic Design career at the Alajuela Interuniversity campus of the University of Costa Rica. For this, the author adapted Schenk’s (2007) taxonomy of drawing for design and proposed six creative activities to facilitate the visualization of ideas in students. We based the development of the activities on a three-dimensional model of a tree previously made. The activities carried out were recognition of materials, gestural drawing, volumetric synthesis with graphic mesh, graphic intervention of photography, light projection on the model, intervention of silhouettes, and collage. The participants (fifteen students at specialty level) rated the teaching strategy with a high score and considered the activities relevant for their professional development. They found that the activities allowed them to visualize ideas in a brief time and with less pressure on the results. The collage activity allowed the participants to assemble ideas and build them again under a fresh approach. Allowing them to assume their drawings, reorganize them from new configurations, and re-conceive themselves from a different point of view. The same participants recommended to implement this type of dynamic activity within the drawing courses of the School of Fine Arts at the University of Costa Rica.
