Abstract

Speed is the most outstanding quality of cars, although it would be the Futurist Movement (Marinetti, Milan 1909) the one to initially define and promote this passion for speed: “the splendour of the world has substantially increased with a new type of beauty: the passion for speed…”. These words establish the ideal of Italian design according to which “a beautiful design becomes at the same time the most competitive one functionally”. The FIAT factory itself (1923) was projected as an immense car-producing machine, and the Lingotto building has remained the icon of futurists ever since.
