Abstract

The historical view of design as the most superficial and least important part of reality has given way to a much more pragmatic one in which the beauty of an object carries almost as much weight as its functionality and, in some cases, even more. Today, we all, as consumers, prefer something useful and beautiful to something just useful. Faced with this reality, the World Design Capital -WDC- initiative, proposed as a tool to improve the social, cultural and economic situation of a city for a year, taking advantage of all the benefits that design can offer, is a very attractive proposal and a real 'oxygen balloon' full of imagination for cities in the times of economic and social crisis we are living in.
