The article aims to reconstruct the history of the “Company of Death”, debunking myths and legends behind its history. For a long time the “Company of Death” was considered a group of Neapolitan painters determined to participate in the days of Masaniello's revolt. According to the Neapolitan biographer Bernardo De Dominici, the “Company of Death” was organized by the painter Aniello Falcone and counted among his ranks many Neapolitan artists eager to participate in the days of the revolt. The gang would organize during night time punitive expeditions for the city of Naples, to the detriment of the Spanish who had abused young Neapolitan women. Was it really like that? Can we talk about the birth of a real painting of dissent? For the first time this phenomenon is investigated from the point of view of historical sources and artists' memories.
