Abstract

The construction and solemn dedication of monument erected in honour of Inmaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, in Piazza di Spagna at Rome, culminated papal feasts and public rejoicings determined by Pope Pío IX for celebrating dogmatic definition and proclamation of this Marian devotion. This article studies history of its construction since 1856 to 1857 when the monument was consecrated, its emblematical meanings inspired by ancient memorial columns of Imperial Rome and its politic and symbolical manipulation as a triumph of reigning pontifex.
