Abstract

This article highlights the architectural value of the school complex (a school and eleven teachers’ houses) located in Alfarnate (Spain), for the singularity of its markedly rationalist tone and the development of a typically modernist functionalism. Its daring modernity, for a location so far from the city centre of Ma?laga, transcended popular and traditional architecture to establish prevalence as the solution to the problems in education and accommodation experienced by rural areas in the 1960s. The di culties overcome by the architect Jose? Mari?a Santos Rein to complete this project are documented and analysed in a formal study that testi es to the existence of this architectural complex after the inevitable demolition of the eleven dwellings in 2011.
