Abstract

In 1921 the Ballets Russes presented Cuadro flamenco, a genuinely Spanish staging that transported a scene similar to those seen in the Andalusian cafés cantantes to the stage of a theatre. For this purpose Sergei Diaghilev hired a group of native performers, and commissioned Pablo Picasso to design the set and costumes. This article deals with the genesis and development of the show, from the conception of the original idea to its staging in Paris and London, with special emphasis on the painter’s involvement and the reception by both audiences and critics in both countries.
