This paper aims to reconstruct Herbert Marcuse’s early intellectual itinerary, using for that aim Hegel’s philosophy as a mirror. In the light of his two Hegelsbücher (published in 1932 and 1941), and departing from a brief biographical and intellectual sketch of those years, we will expose both the historic-philosophical “place,” holds by Hegel in both monographs, and the “limits” of Hegel’s philosophical system. By doing so, Marcuse himself defines the task to accomplish by his theoretical praxis, which also would help us to see the existing resonances and dissonances between his “first” and “second” intellectual project.
