Abstract

The concept of an ecosystem, understood as a networked system composed of various interconnected elements, is fundamental to understanding the complex relationships that arise between actors within these exchange networks. In this context, design plays a central role as an articulator of actors, processes, and resources, facilitating solutions adapted to the territorial particularities of an ecosystem. From a peripheral perspective, it is particularly important to examine how design can emerge as a strategic tool for local development, especially in contexts related to the circular economy. To advance this understanding, it is useful to address how a circular design ecosystem is structured in a peripheral context. This study aims to propose a model that represents the Circular Design Ecosystem in the Canary Islands (Spain), understanding a model to be a structured and organised representation that identifies and classifies the different types of actors and actions linked to this ecosystem. To achieve this, a mapping of agents was carried out with the Research and Innovation Group in Design at the University of La Laguna, interviews with experts and interest groups, and a collaborative workshop funded by the Institutional Chair of Environment and Sustainable Development (Cabildo de Tenerife) where the actors, actions, opportunities and challenges of the ecosystem were identified. The results provided a deep understanding of the infrastructure of circular design in the Canary Islands, showing how it is shaped by vernacular, entrepreneurial and collaborative logics, typical of peripheral contexts, and highlighting the need for governance models that effectively integrate design into decision-making. In conclusion, it is highlighted that when design places life at the centre of its processes (Life-Centered Design), it positions the discipline as strategic, especially in the formulation of public policies for the circular economy.
