Abstract

Dave Brown (Barnehurst, 1957), political cartoonist for the British newspaper The Independent since 1996, acquired an artistic training in Fine Art at the University of Leeds, which reveals weekly through a caricature inspired by an artwork. The great artists are represented, with Caravaggio, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Goya, Turner and van Gogh as his main references. And to all of them Picasso is added, to whom he has gone on several occasions since 1999, when he was inspired by The Three Dancers (1925). Other works by the artist from Malaga that serve as a reference are Nude, Green Leaves and Bust (1932), The Rooster (1938) and Still Life with a Bull’s Skull (1939). And also Guernica (1937), in which he recognizes its universal validity as a manifesto against war and violence, as reflected in his works condemning the attacks on the Atocha Station (2004) and The Rambla in Barcelona (2017), as well as the bombings in the Gaza Strip (2009). Based on the bibliographic and newspaper consultation and the author’s valuable personal testimony, this paper investigates the relationship between Picasso’s work and political news through Dave Brown’s cartoons.
