Abstract

This paper treats on the problem of universal gravitational force in the history of modern cosmology: the originating factors of the problem, even in Bruno’s philosophical works, and the Newton’s law of universal gravitation and its precedents. It shows the philosophical and epistemological background of this subject in pre-modern and early modern scienence. The structure of this paper relies on an epistemological problem about Aristotelian and non-Aristotelian ontologies of matter, about early modern atomistic theories, and finally about the resultant cosmology model in the 18th century.
