The figures of Robinson.
The Myth of the Individual, from the XVIIth Century to the XXIth Century (Defoe, Marx, Tournier and Deleuze)

This paper seeks to explore the traits of modern individualism through the different figures of the Robinson myth. To do this, we will examine Daniel Defoe's original novel, how it was received initially, and the "robinsonades" that Karl Marx criticized. We will also look at Michel Tournier's adaptation of the story and Gilles Deleuze’s insights in his article “Tournier, or the world without others.” Additionally, we will analyze Deleuze’s broader philosophical work, especially the notion of Idea in Difference and Repetition, the forms of socius of The Anti-Oedipus and the haecceities with their determination of the surface -longitude and latitude- in A Thousand Plateaus. Our goal is to demonstrate that instead of a world without others, Tournier and Deleuze offer a new understanding of "the other," leading to a fresh view of social relationships which precede ontologically the individuals that compose them.
