Abstract

The concept of libertas is constantly present in Tacitu’s Annales. When it applies to political matters, can have a translation in present terms. The most frequent use relates to the Senate and the class ruling and signifies freedom of speech, although other senses of rhetorical type exist. Tacitus does not propose a return to the old Republic, but a Principate based on consensus. Political action should have practical use, therefore the individual action is criticized.
