Since the year of nineteen hundred and forty-six, in Guatemala the Guatemalan Social Security Institute was created, as an autonomous institution, under public law, to provide the benefit of social security to the working population, without incorporating into that moment to the elderly population, a situation that occurred twenty years later. This incorporation allowed people who have reached the age of sixty-five to access an economic compensation called “pension”, based on the contributions that have been made during their active working life to social security. Although, this pension that they receive in most cases monthly, helps to sustain the household, at present the amount that is received is not even half of the minimum vital for subsistence, so it is necessary to think about new ways of managing pensions, so that they can be increased and meet people's basic needs.
