“The in(visible) music” is an interdisciplinary art project that explores the relationship between music and visual art through synesthesia and abstraction. The project, developed by artist Andrea Lerma Casany in collaboration with musicologist Inmaculada Martínez Ayora, culminated in an exhibition that presented abstract paintings inspired by works from eight female composers from the 16th to the 20th centuries. Building upon Lerma's previous research on synesthesia in composers like Olivier Messiaen and Wassily Kandinsky's color theories, the exhibition combined traditional painting with digital elements, allowing visitors to listen to the musical pieces while observing the resulting works. The project, exhibited at the Museu de la Rajoleria in Paiporta (Valencia) in March 2024, demonstrated the potential of interdisciplinary approaches to make classical music, specifically that of female composers, more accessible to general audiences. The project's innovative approach to presenting works by female composers through visual art has generated interest from academic institutions and opened new possibilities for music appreciation and education.
