Lupe Álvarez is an art critic, curator, teacher, and cultural researcher. Her extensive career has not only allowed her to develop a disruptive vision regarding the study of Art History in Latin America, but also to found the Instituto Superior Tecnológico de Artes del Ecuador (ITAE) and create the Art Theory program in the Faculty of Arts and Letters at the University of Havana. Among her many curatorial projects, the exhibition "Thresholds of Modern Art in Ecuador: A Look at the Processes of Our Aesthetic Modernity" for the Museum of Anthropology and Contemporary Art (MAAC) stands out. In 2016, she was a jury member at the XIII Cuenca Biennial. Currently, she is a professor at the School of Visual Arts of the University of the Arts (UARTES).
Considering Lupe Álvarez as one of the most notable figures in the study of contemporary art in Latin America, the curatorial team for this call has proposed opening a space for reflection to explore, inspired by the paradigm presented by John Berger's 1972 television series "Ways of Seeing," the emergence of different ways of narrating art history that contrast with more traditional methods.
