Spanish Translation of the Cultural Terms in Traditional Chinese Medicine Formulas

As the theoretical system of traditional Chinese medicine is deeply influenced by philosophical thinking, the language of Chinese medicine is characterized by using many philosophical terms. The translation of these terms has been challenging for translators since several cultural elements are involved that have no equivalent in Spanish. This paper aims to analyze the terms of the formulas and prescriptions collected in the Standard glossary from the perspective of intercultural communication. The results show that 1) the terms with cultural characteristics are mainly those whose translation has been chosen through the foreignization route; 2) translation methods are not uniform; 3) the translations are not faithful to the original text. Finally, some translation proposals from Chinese into Spanish are established, through which we hope to promote the standardization of the Spanish translation of Chinese medical terminology.
