Of Comets, Whales and Translators: four active retranslations of Moby-Dick in Spanish

This article deals, from a theoretical and practical perspective, with the analysis of the retranslation of literary works. In order to achieve that purpose, we study the retranslations published in Spain of Moby-Dick (Herman Melville, 1851). The theoretical framework establishes two innovative analysis elements for retranslation studies: i) the fact that some of these retranslations appear in very short periods of time, and their consequent explanations; and ii) the personal written statements of some retranslators as fas as their work as retranslators is concerned. The analysis of those two factors helps us to determine whether those retranslations are “active” or “passive” (Pym 1998). The practical approach offers, first, an historical overview of the eighteen retranslations of Moby-Dick published in Spain; then, we analyze four active retranslations of the novel published in Spain between 2007 and 2014, using the direct testimonies we have of the four retranslators, which illustrate the origins, objectives, and the alleged contributions of those four versions. The essay concludes by emphasizing the importance of both the historical understanding of previous retranslations, and of the written testimonies of the retranslators concerning their task, if available.
