In 1996, K. Young published Internet addiction: the emergence of a new disorder, which was considered to be the first study in this field. Internet addiction has been categorized as "behavioral addiction" (Marks, 1990), rather than chemical addiction, or as "technological addiction", implying human-machine interaction (Griffiths, 1995). The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has only included Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) in the appendix of the DSM-5 as a condition that requires further research before being included in the main text. However, as Kuss and Lopez-Fernandez (2016) suggested, limiting this field exclusively to IGD overlooks large numbers of people who experience negative consequences and significant difficulties in their lives due to addictions associated with the use of the Internet.

The topics of the papers to be published in this issue would include the characteristics of internet addiction, diagnostic instruments, comorbidities, and treatment. Olatz Lopez-Fernandez (Monash University, Australia) will assume the role of editor of this monographic issue.
