Diego de Cazalla, a jewish convert paymaster of the army, settles in Malaga where he develops a long administrative career at the Crown’s service. His non too clear involvement in the King’s business will bring him huge profits which he invests in the acquisition of substantial property in the region of Málaga. In the Guadalorce valley he builds a vast rural estate close to the uninhabited Alquería de la Torre, which he endevours to repopulate with Moorish (“morisco”) settlers from the nearby village of Monda following the conditions specified in the charter of colonists. Thus Cazalla sets into motion the mechanism which will allow him to become lord of vassals and aspire to the aristocracy, privilege enjoyed by his descendants
