Problems in order to guarantee a periodic supply of food and goods and the one-off payments of salary to the troops in fortresses in North Africa already appeared at the beginningof the conquest, during the kingdom of los Reyes Catolicos. In an attempt to provide a solution, the caroline administration established the signing of asientos with bankers and traders, for the payment and supply of some fortresses. This article analyses the one signed in 1529 for Oran and Mazalquivir in greater detail. This contract encompasses three aspects: the rental of the Kingdom’s money in the North of Africa, the payment of the military and the supply of goods.
The documents used as sources, on which this work is based, come from the Archivo General of Simancas. In particular, the sections of Consejo Real, Contaduria del Sueldo, 1a serie and
Guerra y Marina, serie Libros Registro.
