The frustration of a wish: The foundation of a university in Málaga by Don Juan de Berlanga (1561). In this article my aim is to emphasize the interest of certain outstanding members of the court of the Emperor Carlos I towards the foundation of universities in their home cities. One of these eminent figures was Juan de Berlanga, a councellor from Málagam who in this will, authorized on the 26th of November 1561, founded a right of primogeniture binding part of his legacy and stipulating that, in the occurence of the extinction of the masculine bloodline, his money was to go towards the creation of a college-university in his home town. In his will, numerous clauses refer to the organization of the future university. The formation of the Chairs, their endowment and provision, are specified to the utmost detail. The conditions of admittance of the students, the duration and achievements of their studies are also perfectly reflected in the testamentary text.
