Theoretical rogour was one of the most outstanding features of Jansenism, a religious movement that triggered off a troubled and long lasting controversy in France. Repercussions of this can be seen in Malaga in the second half of the 17th century around the personality of Fray Alonso de Santo Tomás, due to his uncompromising view on moral questions. The constitutions of the Synod, held in 1671 under the influence and supervision of this prelate, are clear proof of the practical rigour which he attempted to impose on Malaga´ s society during the latter decades of the 17th century.
