Sol Invictus. A religious model of imperial integration

The effort by the Romans to integrate the complex identity of the different peoples of their Empire in a coherent setting was an exercise which required reflection and execution; which in the field of religious thought required much adding and as little subtraction as possible. The sun cult was one of the most firm supporting items in achieving the most integrating "status quo" possible, even more than the actual Imperial Cult to which it was added in one way or another. This was a process which was greatly traumatic at times, in which there was a notable clash with Christianism, although not only with it. A slow and not always recognised contamination by both sides, led to a solution which was officially acceptable. The ambiguity with each side´ s understanding related to the cult of Sol Invictus, was the key to the solution.
