This paper is based upon fieldwork undertaken in the province of Málaga (Andalucía) in January 1991. It describes how modern forms of grocery retailing are diffusing from the coastal centres of Málaga province into inland towns and beyond, and analyses the form which this diffusion process is taking. It emphasises the polarisation of retailing at a variety of scales and shows that throughout inland Málaga province extremely basic forms retailing exist alongside the modern sector. The paper suggests ways in which the persistence of these archaic forms of retailing might be better understood, and suggests that this would be necessary if the transition to modern retailing were to be planned in ways which minimise advers social and economic impacts on the towns and villages concerned.
