This article offers a study of “los años irreconciliables de España” (“the irreconcilable years in Spain”), on the basis of autobiographical writings by some of the people who lost the Spanish civil war: the writing of Italian Socialist Pietro Nenni, published in Il Nouvo Avanti and Almanaco Socialista; the memoirs of Victoria Kent Siano, written as a refugee in Paris between 1940 and 1944; the diary of María Teresa León, Memoria de la melancolía (Memories of Melancholy), in her wanderings in search of a “small nation, small as a couryard or as the crack on a very solid wall”. In a militant, heartbreaking or quiet voice, these writings captured days of conflicto and hope, distant fights, exile, escape, loss of love ones and dear possessions. The Wanderers, both male and female, found no rest in their quest during the long hours of exile.
