In this study we focus on the crucial role played by Francisco A. Elorza in the beginning of the iron and steel industry in Andalusia. Between 1829 and 1844 he was in charge of the iron and steel factories La Concepción (in Marbella), La Constancia (in Málaga) and El Pedroso (in Seville), in which he applied technical knowledge he had acquired in his exile years in several European countries. With the help of adventurous businessmen, he provided these factories with modern buildings and equipment so that they could mass produce. He was also aware of the disadvantages of these plants, mainly the problem of fuel, given the difficulty to obtain coal at a reasonable price. By the time Elorza left Andalusia in 1844, when he was appointed manager of the factory in Trubia, Andalusian iron and steel industry was thriving, although this situation did not last long.
