During the first half of the sixteenth century, the ecclesiastical arquitecture of Málaga was defined by the quality of the materials and the volume of the buildings. The lager, stone temples were assigned to the cities and the more prestigious institutions (cathedral and collegiate churches), while smaller brick buildings became parish churches, especially in rural areas. Decorative elements were also confined to the former. This was part of an architectural policy designed to enhance and please urban centers, allowing the countryside to fall into cultural poverty and submission.
