The Venetian ambassador Simeone Contarini wrote a detailed report of the political situation of the Spanish monarchy in the beginning of the reign of Felipe III, who let the government in hands of the Duke of Lerma. The critiques of the diplomatic Italian were answered by Juan of Idiáquez, who defended his monarch with passion.
