The local militias, present at the coast of the Kingdom of Granada until the 18th century, constituted an archaic institution that used the inhabitants themselves as occasional soldiers in order to defend the land against any enemy invasion. These companies formed by natives were led by a captain with his respective subordinates. He was appointed by the King and the War Council after the proposal of the town council, that informed of the three candidates through the Coast General Captain. The procedure to propose these military men, as well as the origins of the applicants and elected people, reflect the monopoly enjoyed by the local élites with regards to these posts, specially because of their important social prestige.
