“Modernity” in Málaga fin-de-siècle painting is understood as a pseudo-renovation of realistic and Romantic tradition that refuses decadent extremes as well as the most committed options. La tumba del poeta by Pedro Sáenz presented in 1901 in the National Exhibition reflects better than any other work by this artist the reconciliation aesthetics of academic correctness with moderate fin-de-siècle sensitivity according to majority bourgeois tastes. The following essay deals with the nature of this syncretism that recovers the Greco-Roman mythology to find answers to artistic and vital concerns.Downloads
