Abstract

Phubbing is a phenomenon coined in the last decade that defines the act of ignoring a person in a social interaction to concentrate on a mobile phone. This study aims to analyze how university students perceive the phenomenon of phubbing and its association with social media addiction. A survey design with a Likert-type scale was applied to 2142 students from five Peruvian universities. The psychometric analysis results indicate acceptable internal consistency and a three-factor structure, explaining the behavioral dimensions of phubbing. Descriptive and correlational analyses revealed that most students spend little time on social media and do not perceive a significant impact on their academic life. However, there are significant differences between universities and genders regarding the perception of phubbing. These findings underscore the need for awareness campaigns in universities to mitigate the negative effects of phubbing and excessive social media use and promote a more balanced and healthy usage among students, fostering better interpersonal relationships and academic performance.
