Alhambra: the universe of Luis Barragán

The photographic project presented in this visual essay is dedicated dedicated to a very specific and relevant aspect of the work of Luis Barragán, symbol and seminal piece of modern Mexican architecture and his connection with Alhambra in Granada that, according to his own words, It forms a very important part of his conception of architecture. Almost a century ago, he made an initiation trip to Europe that included Paris and Granada, the two cities that left a deep and indelible mark. The visual exercise presented here gathers images of the inspired by Barragán’s texts and interviews in which he frequently refers to the impressions received from the gardens and architecture of the Alhambra. The images are visual reflections that evoke an architecture of simple volumes and of straight lines, of chiaroscuro and textures of architectonic forms and of garden elements, which, with the aid of water and of the visual contrasts, and with attention to architectural details and the surrounding landscape could have inspired Barragán. These features, reflected through his gaze, are ever present in his architectural work that is, without a doubt, the symbol of Mexican architecture of the 20th century.
