Paternalistic behaviour in children’s literature translations

The aim of this article is to study a translation feature frequently observed in translations for children and young people that can be called “translator paternalism”. Such a behaviour can be witnessed not only in literary translations but also in screen translations. With the description of several case studies the goal of this article is to prove the high frequency of paternalistic trends when translating for children and young people and to propose a typology which could be later improved in future approaches comprising larger corpora of translations.Downloads
