Abstract

The Law 33/2010, of 5th of August, emphasizes the necessity of taking measures to improve the management of the Spanish ports and their efficiency, increasing their competitiveness in a strong competition international context.

For this purpose, this article discusses future predictions on the ports efficiency in the actual Spanish Port System, in the short and medium term. This study is looking for answering some questions, as what level of efficiency will be the Spanish ports in the future, which ports will lead the Spanish Port System in next years, or what will be the hierarchical ranking of those entities depending on their efficiency level. Those answers will allow port managers to take appropriate measures to improve the ports management, with the aim suggested by the above-mentioned Law. For the analysis of the expected Spanish Port System efficiency, we have applied the DEA methodology with tolerances, based on forecasts made by the “Organismo Público Puertos del Estado”, included in the Strategic Plan for Infrastructure and Transport of 2009.
