Abstract

Is it possible a morality without God (Jean-Paul Sartre) or with a god which exists in a suprahuman dimension (Viktor Frankl)? The famous "quote" by Dostoevsky ("If God does not exist, everything is permitted") was not written like that by Dostoevsky. The Holocaust, as a turning point and as an interruption in history, philosophy, and theology, opens new questions "after" Auschwitz. In this paper I discuss Sartrean and Franklean morality while analzing the famous "quote" by Dostoevsky and wondering if a morality with an absent God can prevent future barbarities.
