In the first place it is necessary to point out that the incident which this article echoes may be considered as one of many -as just one more bead in the rosary of confrontations which took place between the shipowners and Municipal authorities in Málaga in the Old regime. These confrontations were caused by the need for supplies for the town and the profit margin which the shipowners and, in this specefic case, the Catalan fishermen aimed at obtaining. These "mishaps" motivated the enactment of a Royal Decree, dated March 13th 1778 which altered the regulations in force for the commercialisation of fish, ending one and for all the confrontations between the Málaga regiment and the ship-owners.
In addition, in this report I propose to emphasis the difficulty which the supplying of this town involved, due to the fact that throughout the 18th century it increased in an unthinkable wya, greatly exceeding the sources of supplies anticipated by the municipal authorities. These sources had been sufficient up to then, before the beggining of the demographic explision.
There are relativeñy few local and national studies on the fishing activities and the men who devotee their lives to it. Frequently fishing appears linked to agricultural activities. As a result the opportunity arose for these 9 study days about the Sea to bring to light studies both on this professional group which is so numerous and important on the coasts of the peninsular and on maritime life in itself. This article aims at contributing a greater amount of knowledge about the behaviour of this fishing group on the shores of the province of Málaga.
In order to achieve these aims this study has been divided into three sections which will be defined in the following way: in the first, the fishing incidents on the coast of the province of Málaga. Secondly the importance of the small village of Fuengirola as part of the fishing group in Málaga and, by extension, that of Catalonia. Finally, the habitual presence in Málaga of the human Catalan element, its incidetn and social involement and the track which its movement through the city has left in the diocesan documentation, specifically in the second half of the 18th century.
